Wheel Building Course

After more than eight years of wheel building (writing this in 2025), the time has come to share my knowledge and pass it on to others.
This is a proper, two-day training course where you will learn the ins and outs of the profession and build your first pair of wheels.
Training program:
Point 01
1. Wheel components
- Rims
- Types of rims
- When to choose carbon and when aluminum?
- High-profile or low-profile rims?
- The whole truth about rim width
- Hookless or hooked… or maybe tubular?
- Hubs and their geometry
- How just a few millimeters in hub geometry can make a dramatic difference in wheel stiffness
- Why are spokes on the non-drive side tensioned so low?
- Straight pull or J-bend?
- How to “cheat physics” when choosing hubs
- Triplet hubs vs standard 1:1 hubs
- Spokes and lacing patterns
- Straight pull vs J-bend
- Spoke materials: steel, aluminum, titanium, BERD, carbon
- How to properly choose the number of spokes
- Which lacing pattern: radial, crossed, triplet?
- Soldering spoke crossings
- Nipples
- Brass or aluminum
- Thread standards: 12G, 13G, 14G, 15G
Point 02
2. Wheel building – how to do it right and avoid mistakes
- How to select all components so the wheel is stiff and durable for years
- Measuring components: rim ERD, hub geometry
- Calculators for determining spoke length
- Variables affecting spoke length calculations: spoke elasticity, nipple length, rim material stiffness
- Cutting and threading spokes
- Preparing hubs for BERD spokes*
- Wheel lacing
- Preparing spoke threads and rim holes – grease or thread lock?
- How to align the logo perfectly with the valve hole
- How not to make mistakes during lacing
- Pulling vs pushing spokes – the old Shimano school
- Truing and stress relieving
- An effective method of truing a wheel without over-stressing the rim
- 0.2 mm lateral runout and 0.5 mm vertical runout – is it possible?
- How to stress relieve a wheel so it never needs re-tensioning or re-truing
- Symmetry and asymmetry – when to deliberately “over-pull” a wheel
- Loss of true after inflating the tire – how to avoid it
- Correct spoke tension and tensiometer calibration
- Best practices in wheel building
- Proper wheel preparation for tubeless systems
- How to protect wheels for shipping
* Theory only, without practical exercises
Point 03
3. Essential wheel-building tools you must have in your workshop
- Truing stand – with dials or without?
- Tensiometer – digital or analog?
- Spoke holders for round spokes (Roval vs Park Tool) and aero spokes
- Nipple wrenches
- Dish tool
- Tensiometer calibration tool
- Wheel stress-relieving table
- Spoke cutter
During the training, you will build a complete pair of wheels, ready to ride.
- If you want to use the training to build a new wheelset for yourself, you can bring your own components or purchase them from me at wholesale prices.
- If you are not interested in a new wheelset, I will provide all components for the practical part of the training.
- My goal is to give you both theoretical and practical knowledge so that you are not afraid to build wheels worth 8,000–10,000 PLN.
- You will leave the training fully prepared to build wheels at a professional level. After the training, you are guaranteed my advice and support whenever you need it.
During the training, you will be provided with:
- Refreshments: coffee, tea, water, and snacks
- One hot meal – i.e. pizza from a good local pizzeria
- Access to a restroom
- Car parking
- If you are not from Wrocław, accommodation between training days is at your own expense.
- The training takes place in my workshop:
51-180 Szymanów (Wrocław)
The training is individual**, intended for one person – you
- Full attention to your needs
- Training pace adjusted to maximize knowledge transfer
** If you run a company and want to send more than one employee, this is possible. The price covers the training itself, not a single person.
After the training, you will receive a PDF with training materials and a 5% discount on one selected wheel-building tool from the CarbonOne.pl store.
Training price: 3999 PLN Net
The training date is arranged individually. To discuss details, please contact me.
